Tejeda
The council of Tejeda is situated in the centre of Gran Canaria, right in the highest region of the island.
The mountain peaks of this municipality encircle the huge basin of Tejeda, which emerged from a huge subsidence crater, carved by water and full of volcanoes.
The basalt monoliths, geological symbols of the island Gran Canaria, crown the mountains of Tejeda and are a must for tourists interested in nature.
This breathtaking view was described as “the petrified storm” by the Spanish writer Miguel de Unamuno.

The first hints of settlements in Tejeda date from the 3rd century a.C. These first settlers of the highest area of the island used to live in caves fitted out for this purpose. Nowadays this type of housing still remains in some neighbourhoods of Tejeda and has been restored for tourist accommodation purposes.
The most important pre-Hispanic settlement lies in the mountain range of Bentayga. This unconquerable natural fortress turned into one of the last redoubts of the Resistance to the Castillian invasion which was due in 1496.
At the Bentayga you can still find the almogarén, a sanctuary where the Guanches performed their religious rites.
Tejeda’s south–western location on Gran Canaria protects it from the clouds that are continually swept along by the trade winds from the north, until they get caught in the cumbres. This guarantees the presence of clean blue skies throughout the whole year. The intensity of the light has a positive effect on the people of Tejeda, making them a joyful and hospitable community.
The annual average temperature is about 19ºC and the average rainfall is 700mm per year.
There are two clearly defined seasons: a warmer and drier period from June to September, and a colder and more humid one from October to January.
